Following recent rapid reviews held in Dorset in relation to non-accidental injuries to non-mobile babies, the Pan-Dorset protocol has been updated to reflect the learning identified in these reviews. This includes:

• The protocol has been strengthened in relation to including consideration from professionals of any previous injuries to siblings and any history of injuries and repeat attendances at A&E etc
• A distinction has been made between non-accidental injury to unexplained injury, and a reminder that professionals should be referring to suspected non-accidental injury to non-mobile babies and children instead of using the term unexplained injury. This is because injuries to non-mobile babies and children are unusual, so should always be explored by professionals.
• A reminder that professionals should consider age of the child and their developmental milestones
• Consideration for families who have moved across borders and exploring any previous history where possible
• Consideration for any attendance at out of routine health appointments, particularly if there is a high frequency in a short period of time
• Evidence of any missed appointments i.e. the child not being brought to an appointment by their parent/carer
• Consideration for professional curiosity for injuries despite the family’s background e.g. if the parents have a professional background
