The Pan-Dorset Safeguarding Children Partnership conference took place on the 18th October 2023. The title of this conference was: Hopefulness for working with adolescent young people and included the following areas of focus on young people’s experience and impact on them around:

Ryan Hart
Ryan Hart shares his family’s story of coercive control and domestic homicide. So far, through his work he has trained over 10,000 professionals in identifying, understanding, and ending domestic abuse.
Ryan is a White Ribbon Ambassador and Refuge Champion speaking out against male violence towards women and children. He has also worked with the charity Level Up to produce and advocate for the acceptance of domestic homicide reporting guidelines and has received several awards for his work – including the Lincolnshire Police Outstanding Contribution to Public Service 2018/2019, BBC Inspirations 2020 award and the Big Issue’s Top 100 Changemakers of 2020.
Ted Daszkiewicz
Ted Daszkiewicz has a psychology background with over 25 years direct work experience with children and families in the statutory, education and voluntary sectors. This has included working in drug rehabilitation, behaviour support, youth justice and trauma related therapeutic interventions. Other positions have included an associate University Lecturer as well as providing consultancy services supporting UK government depts in creating several national children’s workforce development programmes.
Mentalisation refers to the ability to reflect upon, and to understand one’s state of mind; to have insight into what one is feeling, and why. It helps to make sense of our thoughts, beliefs, wishes and feelings and to link these to our actions and behaviours. At times when an individual’s mental wellbeing is under stress this ability can be compromised.
Learning Outcomes
- Increase awareness of a mentalising approach and its application.
- How incorporating mentalisation based working can support practitioners in their relationships with young people & families.
- Key skills and competencies underpinning a mentalising approach.
