6E. Sarah’s Story

Sarah’s story

Sarah, a first‑time mother, was referred to the Perinatal Mental Health Team after experiencing intrusive thoughts and persistent low mood following the birth of her daughter. Although she cared deeply for her baby, Sarah felt overwhelmed by fears that something terrible might happen, leading her to avoid holding or feeding her daughter unless absolutely necessary. This gradually affected early bonding, leaving Sarah feeling guilty and increasingly withdrawn.

Her husband, Tom, also struggled during this period. He experienced rising anxiety as he watched his wife become more distressed, but he felt unsure how to help. Worried about saying or doing the wrong thing, he became emotionally distant, which added to the strain at home. Tom was referred to the perinatal partner wellbeing practitioner who signposted him for support.

Following assessment by the perinatal team, Sarah began regular therapeutic sessions focusing on understanding intrusive thoughts, managing anxiety, and rebuilding confidence in her role as a mother. A medical review supported her to stabilise her mood. The nursery nurse offered practical guidance, modelling sensitive interactions and supporting both parents to strengthen their bond with their baby in manageable steps.

Over time, Sarah noticed her intrusive thoughts reducing, and she became more comfortable engaging with her daughter. Tom also gained confidence through psychoeducation and joint sessions, learning ways to support Sarah and manage his own anxiety. As a family, they gradually developed a stronger sense of connection, safety and joy in their early parenting experience.
